The inaugural exhibition at Mulryan Gallery brings together four sculptors, Vincenzo Muratore, Anna Gillespie, Guggi, Gabriele Risso, and Patrick O’Reilly whose practices are connected not by a shared style, but by a sustained engagement with material and the ways sculpture can carry memory through transformation.
Working across marble, bronze, plaster, stone and mixed media, each artist approaches sculpture as something shaped through time, pressure and change. The works move between the monumental and the intimate, between material weight and psychological presence, asking what sculpture is able to hold: memory, vulnerability, resilience and absence.
Running quietly through the exhibition is the idea of repair. Not repair as restoration, but as transformation. It appears in different forms: in Muratore’s grammar of repair, where fragmentation and reconstruction become a language for exploring inherited identity, postmemory and the unseen forces that shape the self; in Gillespie’s figures suspended between endurance and release; in Risso’s treatment of material as a vessel for presence and memory; and in O’Reilly’s unflinching engagement with bodies under strain. Fracture is not concealed. It remains visible, becoming part of the work itself.
At the centre of the exhibition is Vincenzo Muratore’s practice, which moves between ancient craft and contemporary technology. Rooted in his Sicilian heritage and shaped through a material language spanning marble, bronze, wood and fabric, his work brings together histories, forms and processes often kept apart.
Muratore’s approach is one of sustained material experimentation, bringing stone into dialogue with digital fabrication, cyanotype, metal and textile, where traditional carving becomes a site of enquiry into archetype, memory and transformation. Drawing on Jungian inheritance, his works ask what ancient material holds within it and what new processes might reveal or release. This enquiry extends into the gallery itself, where his working studio remains open throughout the exhibition, inviting visitors to encounter sculpture not as something resolved, but as something still in the process of becoming.
As the first exhibition at Mulryan Gallery, At the Threshold of Form reflects a commitment to work that is materially grounded, intellectually rigorous and attentive to the conditions of making. Rather than offering resolved conclusions, it invites visitors to remain in the space between fracture and repair, attending to what endures, what transforms and what continues to take form.
